The Components of Licensure
Education
1987: New applicants are required to graduate from a NAAB-accredited program.
1993: Continuing education is required for license renewal.
Experience
1984: The IDP is required.
Examination
1943: The first standardized examinations, called the Junior and Senior Examination, are administered.
1954: Alabama models its examination after NCARB’s syllabus.
1983: The board begins administering the ARE.
2006: The board allows early eligibility for the ARE.
Noteworthy
- The board’s first meeting was held on August 10, 1931.
- In 1969, the board grew from five to six members.
- Alabama was the first NCARB member to have the authority to grant funds to a NAAB-accredited school in the state.
